Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes green tea from black tea?

Both green and black tea originate from the Camellia sinensis plant, differing primarily in their processing:

  • Green tea is promptly heated post-harvest to halt oxidation, thereby retaining its vibrant green color and natural properties.
  • Black tea undergoes complete oxidation, resulting in darker leaves along with altered aroma and active ingredients.

In terms of flavor, green tea offers a fresh, grassy taste, while black tea presents a robust, malty essence, often enjoyed with milk and sugar.

When is the ideal time to enjoy each type of tea?

The choice of tea typically depends on the occasion and the desired effect:

  • Green tea is perfect for mid-morning or as a gentle pick-me-up, thanks to its L-theanine content, which promotes calmness and enhances focus. It also serves as a refreshing option in the afternoon.
  • Black tea is best enjoyed in the morning or after a meal when a stronger energy boost is needed. Traditionally, it’s also served in the afternoon, such as during “English Afternoon Tea,” accompanied by milk and sugar.
Any brewing tips to avoid bitter tea?

To steer clear of bitterness, especially with green tea, proper preparation is essential:

  • Green Tea: Avoid boiling water; instead, let it cool to 70 to 80 °C. Steeping time: 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Black Tea: Use boiling water (90 to 100 °C). Brewing time: 3 to 5 minutes, depending on your taste preference.

Using overly hot water or steeping for too long can release more bitter compounds, which, while not harmful, can compromise the flavor.
